From The Book
Issy grasped Pauline's elbow and together they marched through the open gate and up to the door with Office printed
in white letters above it.
They waited for half an hour after stating their business to the haughty receptionist before being ushered into the manager's office, then were left to sit another five
minutes before the manager, Mr Chandler, came in to interview them.
'Have either of you used a sewing machine before?' He peered at them over the top of his spectacles.
'A bit,' Issy admitted doubtfully.
'Of course,' Pauline assured him loftily.
'Of course,' Mr Chandler echoed, looking down at his newly cleaned fingernails to hide the fact he believed Pauline not a bit.
