Synopsis
During the Vietnam War, a highly sophisticated drugs ring is established in Saigon by a ruthless killer, code-named
Senator, and his right-hand man, Felix.
Ten years later, a lifelong friendship begins during an undercover operation in the Falklands when Major Douglas Marven saves the life of Lieutenant John Millane.
These two events come together in 1997 when the, now very successful, drugs operation is forced to close down due to increased activities by the authorities. Senator orders
all loose ends to be tied up. Permanently.
Douglas Marven, dying of cancer, sends his son Sammy to Australia to hide his illness from him. An adventurous young man, Sammy stumbles on the Senator's highly illegal and
dangerous activities. At Marven's request, John Millane flies to Sydney to sort matters out.
In this gripping, adult thriller, Alan Cooper exposes the underbelly of society where people stop at nothing to achieve their criminal ends.

From The Book
Marven and Millane paused just before the point where the surf hit the shingle, and waited. The sea was very angry, and
the high walled breakers were following each other in closely, at regular intervals, then pounding down like drum beats onto the shore. The undertow was so fierce it made a
high-pitched screaming noise as it dragged hundreds of tons of shingle back into the base of the next breaker. They'd calculated it wouldn't be wise to allow themselves to
enter the water in the undertow, which would merely pull them beneath the next wave. Their plan was to hit the water at as fast a run as they could manage, just as the surf
landed, and to try to ride it out before the undertow took hold.
They were just about to commence their run when they experienced a remarkable bit of luck. A large breaker had just landed, but before it could start to recede, two further
breakers, totally out of sequence and appearing to come from completely different angles to their predecessor, immediately followed it. The result was that, while the water
was raging in a tormented dangerous manner, for a few seconds there was no undertow.
'Now, John. Now!'
Millane needed no second telling. He was already running like mad, his left arm almost being torn out of its socket by the weight of the boat and the force of the wind tearing
at it, trying to drag it out of his grasp...
