Synopsis
It is the nineteen twenties, and a spate of robberies in the wealthier suburbs of Melbourne have all the trademarks of Lucy Armitage, cat burglar.
Inspector Keith Saunders has already put Lucy in prison once, and is determined to again bring a halt to her activities. But Lucy always seems to keep one step ahead of the police, until one of her robberies goes horribly wrong and she ends up being wanted for murder and is forced to flee the country.
On holiday in France, recuperating from a gunshot wound to the leg, Inspector Saunders visits the office of old friend, Frank Burton, a newspaperman. While there, Saunders notices some photographs of stolen jewellery, but thinks little of it.
But when the unsolved robberies continue and local authorities have no clue as to the culprit, Saunders begins to wonder.

From The Book
All but the very last stragglers had reached the end of the gangplank. She could feel the vibrations of the ship's engines growing stronger as they gathered more power, ready to leave port and push the ship through the narrow heads and into the open sea. She had won again. Poor Saunders. Poor Sturge. She grinned delightedly as she made her way down to her cabin, thinking of the frustration she knew Keith Saunders must be experiencing. She pictured his lean features, tight with anger, and his eyes, the darkest slate grey.
'Hello Lucy.'
The voice in her ear was calm, as was the face, with its grey eyes regarding her as she spun around, one hand still reaching for the door to her cabin.
