Synopsis
Following the critically acclaimed Australian Gothic: An Anthology of Australian Supernatural Fiction, James Doig has returned from another expedition into the uncharted territory of Australia's grim and ghostly past with a second anthology of chilling stories from Australian authors.

Included here are many tales of terror and supernatural horror from the pens of James Edmund, Charles Junor, J. A. Barry, Morley Roberts, Ernest Favenc and Rosaleen Norton.

With Australian Nightmares, James Doig has uncovered another collection of long forgotten relics from Australia's gothic past that will keep you reading well into the night!

About The Editor
James Doig grew up in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was educated at the University of Western Australia, and the University of Wales, Swansea, where he completed a PhD in medieval history.

James has enjoyed ghost stories for as long as he can remember and has published articles on obscure authors of supernatural and horror fiction, such as R. R. Ryan, Keith Fleming and R. Murray Gilchrist. In 2004 he edited a collection of short stories by the Australian-born writer H. B. Marriott Watson for Ash-Tree Press. Australian Gothic was published in December 2007.

James works at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra and is married with two children.

Australian Nightmares is the second volume of James Doig's gothic anthology series.

From The Book
Australian supernatural and horror fiction is still very much an uncharted territory, especially for the pre-World War II period...One reason for this is that early Australian fantasy and horror stories have not, over the years, attracted serious researchers...For a long time, early Australian supernatural fiction appeared only in overseas anthologies.

[Australian Nightmares] is the second in what I hope will be a modest series of anthologies whose aim is to resurrect forgotten tales of terror and the supernatural by Australian authors.

Most of the stories were found by reading old books and journals at the National Library of Australia or the State Libraries, or through the help and advice of friends and researchers in the field. It can be a thankless task, poring over dreary collections that have been justly forgotten, but there is enormous satisfaction in finding something that deserves to be reprinted.
