   Australian Gothic  Australian Nightmares

Synopsis
James Doig, critically acclaimed editor of Australian Gothic and Australian Nightmares, presents another collection of weird and supernatural fiction.

Reprinted here for the first time since their original publication in long forgotten books and magazines, these rare relics from Australia's past will stimulate the imagination and keep you awake long into the night.

Australian Hauntings completes an outstanding trilogy of gothic fiction, unearthing many classic tales from Australian authors.

About The Editor
James Doig grew up in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was educated at the University of Western Australia, and the University of Wales, Swansea, where he completed a PhD in medieval history.

James has enjoyed ghost stories for as long as he can remember and has published articles on obscure authors of supernatural and horror fiction, such as R. R. Ryan, Keith Fleming and R. Murray Gilchrist. In 2004 he edited a collection of short stories by the Australian-born writer H. B. Marriott Watson for Ash-Tree Press, before delving into Australia's gothic past with his previous two anthologies.

James works at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra and is married with two children.

Australian Hauntings is the third volume of his gothic anthology series.

From The Book
The ghost story is by far the most common type of colonial weird tale. This is not surprising, as the ghost story was extraordinarily popular in the nineteenth century, and its form and dynamic reached a standard form in the middle decades of that century.

The ghost interacts with the living in order to exorcise or ameliorate past sins or unrealised promises. A consequence of this limited dynamic is that the vast majority of ghost stories are conventional and unremarkable, and the Australian ghost story is no exception - most are commercial offerings of little merit.

Occasionally, however, an exceptional writer extends the possibilities of the form and takes it to a new level...
